Garage Lighting 101

ULTRABEAM is a modular system of LED tubes and angle connectors that click together into any grid pattern. One cable, one plug, no electrician needed.

A quick glossary of the terms you'll see across our lighting guides and product pages.

• Lumens: the total light output. More lumens means a brighter light.
• Lux: lumens per square metre. This tells you how bright a surface really is, once room size is taken into account.
• Kelvin (K): the colour of the light. Low numbers (2700K) are warm and yellow, high numbers (6500K) are cool daylight.
• Colour temperature: how warm or cool the light looks. ULTRABEAM is fixed at 6500K daylight white for true colours.

How ULTRABEAM stacks up against the usual garage lighting options.

• Fluorescent tubes: flicker, slow to start, contain mercury and give uneven light with a greenish tint
• Halogen floodlights: run very hot, use a lot of power and throw harsh shadows across your work
• Fixed LED panels: bright, but limited coverage. Once mounted you cannot reconfigure or expand them.
• Bare bulbs: cheap, but poor uneven light with dark spots across the room

How much light you need comes down to your space and what you do in it.

• Single garage (~18m²): a small grid kit gives bright, even light for parking and basic tasks
• Double garage (~36m²): a medium grid kit, or two small kits, covers the full space for workshop use
• Large or triple garage (~54m² and up): several grid kits keep every corner lit, no dark spots
